Happy Mothers' Day!

Sophie's second year has already brought some changes. Recently, she has discovered that she likes being read to. Before, she would only want to flip through books on her own and didn't have the patience for us to read the books to her. All of a sudden, she started choosing books and bringing them to us to read to her. She actually gets really upset if you don't do it.

Here is a list of words we think Sophie understands, though can't say:

Mommy/Mama
Daddy/Dada
Milk
Water
Cheerios
Outside
Shoes
PJs
Book
Turn the page
Where's Sophie?
Peekaboo
Dance
Bubbles

There are probably others (like "diaper"), but those are the ones we've seen real reactions to. Also, she says "Dada," "Mama," and "baby," but only when prompted.

This weekend, we took Sophie to a small lake nearby so she could go swimming for the first time. She had a good time for the most part -- she's happy anytime she gets a chance to explore a new place -- but was a little bit scared of the water, particularly having her head near it. Here are a couple of pictures:

We didn't do much to celebrate Mothers' Day, since I am sick and can't even talk, so phone calls are out. John took care of Sophie all morning so I could sleep in, did the dishes from guests on Friday and Saturday nights, and bought me a nice pot of hyacinth blooms. We'll probably order something tasty for dinner out. But all the other moms we know are on our minds, and we're sending loving and grateful thoughts their way!
