We're Calling It

Sophie is officially walking. For a week or two, we've seen her take numerous steps in a row, but in the past couple of days, she has begun to consistently use her new skill to get from one place to another. And we've seen her take upwards of 20 steps in a row. So we're calling it! Still, she loves walking with us holding her hands; I think it's because she can go faster without worrying about falling.

She still loves to flip through books, even ones without pictures. We've had our tax materials out, and this morning she was leafing through the 1040 instruction booklet, just like she would one of her own books.

She does NOT love order. When she sees objects neatly arranged somehow -- books on a bookshelf, CDs on a rack, pans or tupperware in the kitchen cabinets -- she seems compelled to create chaos. She's not interested in playing with the objects. As soon as she's flung everything onto the floor, she loses interest and moves on to the next thing. But we don't hold it against her.

Some days, it seems like she talks as much as we do, but nothing she says is distinguishable yet. We'd like to think she's close to saying "mama" or "dada," but realistically I don't think so. She clearly understands certain words and phrases we say, though, which makes it a bit more satisfying to talk to her.

The past few days have been difficult because we all got sick and are still not healthy. Sophie got a runny nose on Thursday, but it didn't seem to bother her too much. By Friday night, I felt miserable and couldn't take any medicine because of the pregnancy. Saturday, John started to feel sick, too. Sunday, I felt somewhat better, John got worse, and oddly, so did Sophie. Her nose was so stuffy that she couldn't nurse because she couldn't breathe. We tried to suction it out, but she HATES that. It takes so long to calm her down after we manage to do it that by the time she does, she's all snotty again. Oh well. Tomorrow we will try giving her cow's milk for the first time, since she's just about one year old!

Here is a very cute video of Sophie that John made:

Edit by John: Warner Music Group did not like us posting a video with their music on YouTube, so I switched to Blogger. Also, Sophie did not like the cow's milk. We will keep trying though.
